Kelly, Winston, and I were walking up 5th Avenue. It was midday, the full New York chaos of it all was in full swing. Suits, tourists, cabs, delivery guys, a dog in a stroller all rushing by. You know the scene. At 63rd St, that particular intersection on that particular day was the kind of gridlock that makes you wonder how this city functions at all.
We were half paying attention. No uniform. No vest. No badge. No hard hat. No lanyard. Nothing official. Just a man — homeless, clearly — standing in the middle of a very busy intersection in one of the busiest cities on the planet, running traffic like he owned the place.
And everyone listened.
Businessmen. Tourists. A bus driver. A woman in a fur coat who absolutely had opinions about everything. All of them, without blinking, deferred to this guy.
Here's what hit me: not a single person stopped to check his credentials.
Nobody asked who sent him. Nobody demanded to see his badge. Nobody said wait, are you actually authorized to do this? They just... followed. Because someone stepped up, filled the void, and was competent. That was enough.

He earned it the only way anyone actually can. He just stepped up, did the job and provided the effective leadership that was called for on that busy day.
